The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University conducts both fundamental and application-oriented research and comes up with solutions for productivity improvements which meet the requirements of today’s industrial practice.
An important particular field is the transmission and power train technology. The WZL Gear Department is a team of scientists from the chairs of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology, who focus on topics and problems which are related to transmission and gear design, process simulation and optimization as well as gear noise and fatigue testing.

Our aim at the Fraunhofer IPT is to develop new and optimize existing solutions through practice-oriented research and development for our clients in modern production industries. We transfer the results of this R&D directly into practice in client companies, which come from a wide range of industries – the automotive industries and its suppliers, especially tool and die making, as well as fine-mechanics and optical industries, aerospace industries and machine tool manufacturers. We also assist international clients via the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Innovation CMI in Boston, USA.The Fraunhofer IPT employs a staff of approximately 250, currently working on projects in our 6000 m2 facilities, 3500 m2 of which are used as laboratories and machining workshops.

The Research Institute for Operations Management (Forschungsinstitut für Rationalisierung, FIR) is one of the leading institutes in the field of applied research conducted into company organisation and development. A non-profit organisation at the RWTH Aachen University, the FIR is a cross-industry scholarly institution.
