As a basis for decision-making regarding the possible introduction of a cross-product area modularization method, the expected cost savings potentials for the product portfolios in question was to be estimated.

Objective

Objective

  • Evaluation of the savings potential, of the introduction of a cross-product area modularization method
  • Quantification of potential both within the business units and across business units

Approach

Approach

  • Quantitative analysis of one product category based on selected BOMs by means of features and variant trees (Deep Drill)
  • “Educated guess” based on qualitative criteria, comparison and analogies for other product categories

Results

Results

  • Assessment of potential for part number reduction coming from product modularization shows promising results of 30 - 72 % reduction
  • Quantification of potential for part number reduction resulted in significant annual cost saving which justified implementation easily
